Home Business Start Up
Target Customers & Increase Sales
Do you target customers? WHO are you targeting and WHY?
Too often the home business start up operator is keen to sell to whoever will buy their
product/services. This is fine; of course you will not knock back a sale. BUT it is essential to target
customers. Target your product and your marketing, price point, promotion etc to a specific sector of the
community, if you want to increase sales.
When you target customers, remember that advertising, brochures, colour, style of font etc will appeal to
certain types of people (according to culture, age, gender etc) and you need to consider all of this when you are
developing your product or service for a target market. The marketing/promotional tools you intend using will also
change e.g. you may decide not to use the Internet if your target market is women over 60 years of age.

If you produce a number of products and services you will probably have a variety of target
customers. For example if you produce a service for the Small Business sector and another service
for the Home Based Business sector, then you are targeting two different markets from similar
sectors. You need to know what the differences are to ensure you market and promote your service
well and capture sales. Keep a record of ‘what’ and ‘why’ and measure results - what does not work
for one group of customers may work for another group.

Case Study to Target Customers for
Home Business Start Up
June Wilson had a great idea. She was going to make boxes to place videos in as a gift box. They
were to be made in a high gloss red with a little printed section that said ‘To’ and ‘From’ then
they would have a ribbon and bow go around the box and be held with Velcro.
So she decided to target customers to see if there was interest. She had a resounding success
with over 95% saying they would pay extra for this great gift packaging. So she went ahead and had
5,000 boxes made - then she could not sell them....
She had researched the end buyer when her actual customers were the retailers who sold to the
end buyer. By not recognizing who her target customers actually were, she set herself up to
fail!
