Home Business Start Up Benefit Hugely From
Business Procedures Manual
Not only do home business start up operators need a Phone Log in their business
procedures manual - it is equally important to keep a Mail Log for outgoing mail. It saves so much time and
stress when something ‘goes missing’ (as it invariably does).
Home business start up operators can give the client exact details of when a piece of mail was sent. If using
registered or express mail – put the sticker number on your Log too. In Australia we all understand that
‘Guaranteed Next Day Delivery’ means that if it gets lost you will get the cost of the express post bag replaced –
covering the goods requires you to take out additional insurance. This Mail Log is proof of your actions.

As in so many cases, the template removes some of the stress if things go wrong e.g. mail
getting lost. You have a record. You are seen as being organised and acting in a professional
manner. It is amazing that so many businesses do not see this as an important part of their
business. They often seem to think just providing the product or service is sufficient.

Where possible always keep a copy of what you send by mail. This is where a photocopier or printer becomes a
valuable piece of equipment for home business start up operators.
If you send goods in the mail then it is imperative that you have a Marine Insurance Policy for the invoice
value of the good (not just the cost of making them). Make sure that you also have a log template in your business
procedures manual for all forms of insurance that you will have for your business.

Case
Study
A case study showing the benefits of a business procedures manual for home business start
up.
I have lost three important ‘packages’ over the years. One was a transparency to be used on the
catalogue of an art exhibition I was holding. There was no copy - so it did cause a great deal of
stress as another photo had to be taken and there was a tight time frame.
Another was a large display unit being sent overseas. There were two crates and one went
missing. Unfortunately the sample product was also in the missing crate. As this was for an
International Trade Fair, my exhibit could not be shown. This was a real financial loss as well as
a potential future financial loss (as no orders could be placed).
The third was an order of a number of hand painted silk scarves. The client was not happy as
they were waiting on the order and by the time they were re-painted and sent their client no longer
required them. In both the latter cases, I was insured for the cost of the product - so did get
some compensation. But it hurt!

Tip
A tip for home business start up business procedures manual.
When mailing important product, if possible send an email or fax to let
the client know it is in the mail. Then both parties can react quickly if it does not turn up in a
reasonable timeframe. It also lets the client know that you care enough to put their mind at rest
by letting them know you have actioned their order.
