Home Business Start Up Must have a
Registration of Business Name Certificate
All businesses need to have a name. You will be given a
certificate of proof of the registration of business name from the authorities, once registration is complete.
You may also decide to be incorporated as a company and a further certificate is required. However, you will
still need the registration of business name.
Note: Businesses who trade under the owner’s name only, do not have to register in Australia

No Cost
Many businesses (especially companies) have more than one Registration of Business Name. But
even a sole trader may decide to register more than one name to cover a specific project within
their business e.g. ‘Gabogrecan Enterprises’ (a sole trader) also had the business names ‘Giftline
Direct’, ‘Micro Spiral Publishing Company’. Later a Pty Ltd Company called MBN (Int’l) Pty Ltd was
incorporated, trading as Micro Biz Navigator, and ‘Gabogrecan Enterprises’ was wound up. Now Micro
Biz Navigator has been wound up and Home Based Business Australia is one of the trading names of
the company. Therefore it is important to keep a Register of the names, their numbers and their
date due for renewal. Keep a photocopy of the actual certificate (as the originals should be framed
and showing on the wall of the business - even if it is home based!) together with the Register in
this Manual.

When organising the registration of a business name, please remember to make it simple (you want people to be
able to remember it) and where possible related to the type of business you are running e.g. Jay’s Catering
Service. Too often the registration of business name is not suitable and home business start up operators have to
go to the expense and trouble of re-registering a more suitable name. It is always a good idea to ask a number of
unrelated people what they think of a name (what does it convey to them; can they spell it, can they remember it
etc) before registering it. This sort of research is simple but can save you a lot of time and confusion in the
future.

Case Study of Home Business Start Up
Problem With Registration of Business Name
A new Network in Australia called itself ‘Mind Your Business’. They got some good media coverage
and membership grew. It did not take too long before the accounting software giant ‘Mind Your Own
Business’ (MYOB) discovered this and forced the network to change their name. There is naturally a
dollar cost to this, a loss of time and a loss of customers who can’t figure out how to make
contact after the changed name - to say nothing of the lost opportunity with the media that was
hard won in the first place.

of Business Name for
Home Business Start Up
Don’t forget to check to see if a similar name as the one you want to use
has a trade mark - because if it does and the owner of the trade mark finds out - not only can you
be made change the name - you may also get sued! You can go to the link below to find out about
