Being The Wordsmith is Another Skill the
Home Business Startup Operator
Has to Master
The wordsmith not only has to craft their content for
websites, blogs, articles etc., they also have to use their skills to support their expertise in other areas.
However, people do not just become experts, they earn that title/recognition because of their experience,
their regular research and the fact that they are prepared to share their knowledge.
It is this ‘sharing’ which makes individuals accepted as ‘experts’. And to encourage and foster that perception,
it is important to not only be ‘heard’ but to be ‘read’.

Keep a log of what articles you write and where they appear in print. This not only allows you
to measure your own productivity, it also gives you the confidence to build on the output – perhaps
a book? And you never know when you may need the details for a CV.
Home business start up operators will find that this Free template will assist them in keeping their records up to
date.

As the wordsmith, you need to write articles and submit them to newsletters, magazines,
newspapers etc and write papers to present at Conferences. This is the way you build your profile and
credibility. The more articles ‘out there’ in the public arena, the faster you will be perceived as an ‘expert
in your field’.
If you feel uncomfortable as the wordsmith, then don’t despair; there is software available that can assist you
with both your research and your writing. As an author, Barbara Gabogrecan still uses this software to help her
when she is writing on a topic that she has little or no knowledge on and she finds it a wonderful tool to
have.

Case
Study
Barbara Gabogrecan has always been keen to assist the Micro and HBB sector. She coined the word
Micro and defined it as a business operator employing less than five (the Australian Federal
Government then took this definition and used it in all its business descriptions); she commenced
the Micro Business Network and within #5 years had a data base of 20,000. She was appointed to a
number of Government committees, to advise them on the needs of the sector; she worked with a local
council and developed the first HBB website (she provided the content); she presented papers at
conferences on HBB; she instigated and ran National Awards for the Micro/HBB sector; she wrote a
book titled ‘How to Run a Business from the Kitchen Table’ - it did not happen overnight – but she
was soon considered to be the expert on the Micro/HBB sector. Consequently the media constantly
asked her to comment on or provide them with articles, so her status as an expert grew. This would
not have happened if she had not constantly written reports, letters, website content etc.

Tip
It is not often we set out to be experts - but when you have knowledge
share it and you will be perceived as an expert. The more articles you have placed in online
directories, the more often your name will appear in a Google search. More people than you
think search on your name to see what your achievements have been.
